1.
What will I need to make the change over to my
new name?
You will need a certified copy of your marriage
certificate (in some areas called the marriage
license) that shows your new name(s). This official document
is usually mailed to a new couple a week or two after the wedding,
however in some jurisdictions it must be requested. In most
cases one certified copy is sufficient
to
complete a name change.
2.
Will I need to do anything about my new name before
my wedding?
No,
not as far as the notification part goes. In some
areas you may be required to put your new married name
on the original marriage license application. Although
there are some notifications that can be done before
you get married, for the most part it is perfectly
fine to wait until a couple of weeks after the wedding
(you will need to wait until you have your certified copy
of the marriage certificate before you can change your
most important records anyway).
3.
Can a groom who is changing his name also use this
kit?
Yes.
He will need to follow the same procedures as a bride
for updating his records. Because the majority of
grooms choose to retain their surnames, the kit
contains several Change of Marital Status forms
that
can be used by the groom to notify his employers, insurance companies,
health care providers and others about his recent marriage.
4.
Are notification letters included in the kit?
Yes.
Our
kit is designed for ease of use and it's
totally self-contained, which means it has the
preprinted forms already at your fingertips (they just
take a few seconds each to fill out). This eliminates
the hassles of installing and learning another
software program, or having to copy or print out your
own forms. This is beneficial because it allows a
new bride to take the kit wherever she goes- in her
car, or even on her honeymoon- and it can be used
without a computer.
The
book contains over 50 form letters (14 different
styles) which cover every situation.
5.
Can the kit help me with a non-marriage name
change?
In
order to
accomplish a name change outside of marriage you
will need to petition a court to obtain a court order
granting your new name which will serve as
official proof of your new name (instead of a marriage
certificate) and allow you to change your important
records. Although you may find the notification instructions
particularly helpful, the form
letters and
post cards with the kit are specifically designed for
new brides.
